I have a curved spine, scoliosis like my Father & Grandmother. Why did the Universe β God make me this way? So we can talk about it, share stories, empathize with one another. Because I am who I am, and every part of me, ever rod and screw inside of is functioning perfectly well.
Itβs taken me till now, to feel less sorry for myself and more often wanting to talk about scoliosis, to learn more about it, know the terminology and share the experience of my surgery, recovery, self esteem, and mental health. So that I can advocate for myself and be aware when Iβm not feeling well and make adjustments. Such as standing up straight with my shoulders back, purchasing shoes with the proper insoles and cushion, carrying pillows on trips and long car rides, being that person that is responsible for themselves because Iβm worth it. For me, this is owning my curves.
I own my curves by hiding less, each time I wear a blouse or top that reveals my vertebrae, my back and hunch, Iβm able to be more confident and talk to anyone who asks questions. Hiding less means Iβm being unapologetically and authentic about who I am. I am beautiful just as I am.

What are some ways you own your body and who you are? How do you advocate for yourself?
